Madlanga Commission Probes 121 KZN Political Killing Dockets Stuck At Police HQ

Concerns are mounting over the 121 case dockets removed from the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) and transferred to the national police headquarters in Pretoria.

The files were initially taken for auditing, but once the process was completed, they remained at headquarters as uncertainty grew around the next steps.

The issue has now become a focal point at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where testimony continues to shed light on the events leading to the PKTT’s disbandment.

Madlanga Commission Hears KZN Political Killing Dockets Mired in Confusion

Appearing before the commission, Mary Motsepe, who heads the SAPS serious and violent crime investigation component, detailed how the 121 dockets eventually ended up under her supervision.

Motsepe testified that the files were brought to national headquarters after KZN police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, “refused to have anything to do with them”.

She added that during a meeting with suspended deputy national police commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya, in May, she was told that approval had been granted for the PKTT to be dissolved.

“He told me that according to the approved organisational structure, the PKTT must cease to operate and fall under murder and robbery.”

Testimony Highlights Breakdown in Leadership

Motsepe said her understanding was that, once Mkhwanazi distanced himself from the dockets, national police commissioner, Fannie Masemola, instructed Sibiya to use his discretion in deciding what should happen to them.

She testified that Sibiya then directed her to assemble a team of detectives to investigate the cases, since the provincial commissioner did not want involvement.
