M1 Horror Smash: Two Killed As Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Major Johannesburg Highway

A deadly multi-vehicle crash has brought traffic on the M1 North to a standstill near Houghton Estate on Sunday morning.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed that at least three vehicles were involved in the collision, which happened before the Glenhove Road off-ramp as holidaymakers made their way back home.
Two Deaths Confirmed In M1 Crash
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said two people were declared dead at the scene, while emergency crews rushed to assist with reports of people trapped inside the wreckage.
“JMPD officers are currently on scene. Fire and Rescue services are en route to assist with extrication,” Fihla said.

The M1 Northbound has been completely closed at 11th Avenue, with all lanes shut to allow emergency services to work and investigators to process the scene.
Road Closures, Traffic Chaos and Alternative Routes
Motorists have been urged to steer clear of the affected stretch of the M1 North between 11th Avenue and Glenhove Road, as congestion continues to build in surrounding areas.
“Expect heavy delays in the surrounding Houghton and Melrose areas. Use alternative routes such as Oxford Road, Louis Botha Avenue and Jan Smuts Avenue.
“The roadway is expected to remain closed for some time while the scene is cleared and processed. Please drive with caution, yield to approaching emergency vehicles, and follow the instructions of JMPD officers directing traffic at diversion points,” Fihla said.
Traffic officials remain on-site to manage diversions and ensure public safety.
