Lydenburg In Shock as Two Nigerian Nationals Accused Of Kidnapping And Murdering Local Man Appear In Court

Tensions are running high in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga following the court appearance of two Nigerian nationals accused of kidnapping and murdering 49-year-old local resident Gift Combrinck. The case has shaken the small mining town, sparking community outrage and renewed calls for tougher action against drug-linked violence.

Nigerian Accused Remain in Custody, Family Demands Justice

The suspects, Thinedu Chukwu (39) and Ikena Obi (43), appeared briefly in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court this week. Their bail hearing has been postponed to November 11, and both men will remain in custody until then.

Outside the courthouse, protesters carrying placards gathered to demand justice for Combrinck and to urge the court to deny the accused bail. Among them was the victim’s sister, Shireen Mathenjwa, who described the family’s devastation and the chilling details they have learned since her brother’s disappearance.

“The Nigerian foreign nationals took my brother. Apparently, they accused him of stealing their drugs. I do not know if that is true — it is just hearsay, but that is what the witness said,” Mathenjwa told Newzroom Afrika.

Police have confirmed that Combrinck was reported missing on September 23, 2025, after he failed to return home.

Body Discovered Days After Disappearance

The search ended tragically three days later when police discovered Combrinck’s body near De Clerq Street in Lydenburg.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Thulisile Magagula confirmed the details in a statement:

“Tragically, on 25 September 2025, the body of Mr Combrinck was discovered near De Clerq Street in Lydenburg. Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim was kidnapped, which led to the arrest of the two suspects.”

According to SAPS, the investigation was fast-tracked, and the accused were traced and arrested within days. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests as the probe continues.

Combrinck’s death has left the Lydenburg community reeling. Residents describe him as a kind, hardworking man and say his murder has intensified fears about growing violent crime linked to drug activity in the area.

“We just want justice for Gift. We cannot live in fear anymore,” one protester told reporters outside court.

Community members have vowed to continue picketing during every court appearance until justice is served. Many locals have also called on authorities to clamp down on illegal drug networks allegedly operating in the town and surrounding areas.

The case has reignited national debate over crime, drugs, and the safety of small-town communities in Mpumalanga. Residents say they feel abandoned and unsafe, with some accusing local authorities of failing to act sooner against suspected criminal operations.

Police have urged calm, assuring residents that the investigation will be handled with “the utmost seriousness.”

Chukwu and Obi are expected to return to court on November 11, 2025, for their formal bail application.

As the community continues to mourn, the message from Lydenburg remains clear: justice for Gift Combrinck — and safety for the town he called home.
