Lucky Montana Dismisses SARS R55 Million Tax Claim: “I Don’t Owe Even A Cent”

The clash between the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and former Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) CEO Lucky Montana has intensified after he firmly denied owing the tax authority any money.

“I do not owe SARS even a cent,” Montana declared, following revelations about his alleged R55 million tax debt.

SARS had earlier disclosed details of Montana’s tax affairs after warning him to retract allegations of fraud within 24 hours or face public exposure of his confidential financial information.

SARS Reveals Details of Montana’s Alleged Tax Debt

According to SARS, Montana submitted a settlement proposal last month offering R5.4 million to settle his total outstanding debt of R55,133,282.94, SurgeZirc SA previously reported.

“Recently, on August 8, 2025, Mr Montana submitted a compromise offer to SARS, offering the sum of approximately R5.4 million to satisfy the total tax debt outstanding,” the revenue service stated.

SARS explained that, under the Tax Administration Act, a compromise offer can only be considered if the taxpayer acknowledges the debt.

“A prerequisite in terms of the Tax Administration Act for SARS to consider a compromise offer is that the tax debt may not be disputed. In other words, the taxpayer must accept that the tax is due and payable,” SARS said.

The agency further highlighted a pattern of non-compliance, accusing Montana of failing to submit tax returns over multiple years and of withholding relevant documents during audits. Despite receiving several extensions, SARS said his responses were “limited” and did not address their findings.

Montana Hits Back and Promises Full Response

In response, Montana took to X (formerly Twitter) to reject SARS’ claims outright. “I do not owe SARS even a cent. I will address all the issues tomorrow during my presser,” he wrote.

Montana is expected to hold a press briefing to publicly respond to SARS’ statements and provide his side of the story, as tensions between the two parties continue to escalate.
