Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi addressed mourners during the official South African Police Service funeral service and said the loss of a highly skilled officer had deeply affected police members.
“For me on my side, having worn the badge, having gone through the trouble that Captain Nel has gone through, I understand the pain and anger that the members, especially the members of the specialised task force, have at this stage that a criminal is able to eliminate one of our operators of the special task force,” Mkhwanazi said.

Investigation Into Killing Continues
Police have not yet announced any arrests linked to the shooting.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the attack, which has raised concerns over the targeting of specialised police officers in KwaZulu-Natal.
The killing of Nel has drawn widespread attention within law enforcement circles, with colleagues describing his death as a major loss to the SAPS.
