Louis Liebenberg’s Bail Bid Delayed Amid Psychiatric Evaluation And Unusual Courtroom Behaviour

Diamond dealer and alleged Ponzi scheme figure Louis Liebenberg will remain in custody for at least another month after his bail application was postponed once more.

The delay comes as Liebenberg awaits admission to Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital for a mental evaluation, with the court hearing that he is currently 23rd on the facility’s waiting list.

His case returned to the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court, where he appeared alongside his wife, Desiree Liebenberg, and several co-accused facing charges linked to more than R4 billion in alleged fraud.

Louis Liebenberg’s Court Appearance Marked By Unusual Behaviour

Proceedings took an unexpected turn when Liebenberg was heard singing from the court holding cells before being called to stand before the magistrate.

He later joined his co-accused, including Magdelena Petronella Kleynhans, Helena Dorothea Amy Schulenburg, Adriaan Dewald Strydom, Christelle Badenhorst, Nicolize van Heerden, Walter Niendinger and Johannes Petrus Badenhorst.

The group is facing serious fraud-related charges tied to an alleged scheme involving billions of rand.

Bail Application Postponed Pending Psychiatric Assessment

The court confirmed that Liebenberg’s bail application cannot proceed until his mental evaluation is completed at Weskoppies.

He is expected to return to court on 22 May, by which time the court hopes there will be progress regarding his admission.

The latest postponement follows an earlier confrontation in August last year, when Liebenberg became involved in a heated exchange with the magistrate during bail proceedings.

That incident remains part of the broader context as the court continues to assess his case.
