South Africa’s Losing Battle Against Illegal Guns Firearms

The continued efforts of police forces to combat the issue of illegal guns and ammunition have generated substantial results, evidenced by the recent detainment of two suspects in separate situations.

Firearm Incident in Bishop Lavis

On February 17, 2025, members of the Bishop Lavis police were conducting proactive crime-fighting activities when they got a tip about an illegally acquired firearm. Officers responded quickly to this information and went to a home on Olyfberg Road.

Upon accessing the premises, they performed a comprehensive search, which resulted in the recovery of a pistol and ammo. This operation resulted in the arrest of a 23-year-old man for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Steenberg Police Operation

In a separate incident, early hours on Tuesday February 18, 2025, Steenberg police were patrolling Lavender Hill as part of their crime prevention duty. During their patrol on Military Road, they noticed a suspicious person attempting to avoid their presence.

The members approached the suspect, finding a Norinco 9mm pistol and ammo. As a result, a 37-year-old male was detained for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Both suspects are expected to face charges in their local magistrates’ courts, Bishop Lavis and Wynberg for unlawful firearms possession.

As police continue to crack down on illegal guns, it is anticipated that these efforts would dissuade future criminals and instill a sense of security among citizens. Collaboration between law enforcement and the community is critical for effectively fighting crime and bringing individuals who illegally possess firearms to justice.
