Lira Reflects On Her Inspiring Recovery Journey Three Years After Stroke

South African music icon Lira has spoken candidly about her healing journey, more than three years after a stroke dramatically changed her life.

The Wa Mpaleha hitmaker was on tour in Frankfurt, Germany, in March 2022 when she suffered the health scare that left her with speech difficulties. Doctors later diagnosed her with aphasia, a condition that affects language and communication.

What followed was a long and emotional road to recovery in South Africa—one filled with therapy, determination, and unshakable faith.

“I Had to Learn the Alphabet Again”

Opening up about her rehabilitation, Lira revealed that she had to start from the very basics.

“I had to learn the alphabet and how to put simple words together, like ‘cat, hello, apple,’ and use those words to form a sentence,” she said.

The journey was far from easy. At times, it felt painfully slow, but Lira explained that the process taught her to see life through a different lens.

“Slowing down made me appreciate the progress I was making. It filled me with gratitude, it filled me with joy, and I was excited to see my progress.”

In May 2025, Lira celebrated a full year since officially returning to the stage—an achievement she holds close to her heart.

Now stronger and more determined than ever, the award-winning singer is booked for several major shows this year.

Fans can catch her at the DStv Delicious Festival in September and the Business Premium Jazz Festival, where she will share the stage with Afro-soul powerhouses Amanda Black and Thandiswa Mazwai.
