Limpopo Transport Authorities Seize Overloaded Cross-Border Bus On N1

An overloaded cross-border bus travelling from Zimbabwe into South Africa has been taken off the road by the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety.

The vehicle was stopped on the N1 on Saturday during routine traffic operations. Officials found that the bus was carrying ninety passengers, exceeding its certified capacity of seventy-one seated passengers by nineteen people.

Further checks revealed that the bus was operating illegally, as it was overloaded, did not have a cross-border permit, and was running without a valid operating licence.

Overloaded Bus Intercepted on Major Limpopo Route

Authorities immediately discontinued the bus’s operating licence and detained the vehicle at the Polokwane Traffic Control Centre. The interception forms part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and ensure compliance among public transport operators.

Passengers were left stranded briefly as officials made arrangements to ensure they could continue their journey safely using alternative transport.

Transport Department Warns Against Road Law Violations

Limpopo Transport Media Liaison Dali Tshifhiwa confirmed the department’s firm stance on non-compliance.

“The bus has been discontinued and is currently detained at Polokwane Traffic Control Centre. Alternative transport is being arranged for the passengers to continue their journey.

“The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety will not tolerate lawlessness on our roads. We urge all operators to respect our laws and prioritise passenger safety,” said Tshifhiwa.

The department reiterated that cross-border operators must meet all legal requirements before transporting passengers into South Africa, warning that enforcement operations will continue across the province.
