Limpopo Teacher Denied Bail After Rape Allegations Involving 13-Year-Old Learner

A 58-year-old teacher from the Capricorn district in Limpopo has been denied bail by the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court following his arrest for the alleged rape of a 13-year-old female learner.

The incident prompted swift legal action after the child reported the abuse to her school principal.

To protect the identity of the minor and prevent secondary victimisation, the names of the teacher, school, and learner have been withheld.

Teacher Evaded Arrest For Three Days

According to Limpopo provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, the alleged rape was reported on 31 March 2025.

After the victim disclosed the abuse to the school principal, the police were immediately contacted.

However, the accused fled the school premises and evaded arrest for three days before being apprehended.

During the bail hearing, the court emphasized that the accused had already attempted to interfere with the case by sending individuals to apologise to the victim on his behalf.

The court further noted that the teacher poses a flight risk and his release could spark public outrage or compromise his own safety.

Court Dismisses Bail

In denying bail, the court said the accused failed to demonstrate any exceptional circumstances that would justify his release.

“The onus was on the applicant to prove that the interests of justice permit his release. He has not done so,” the magistrate ruled.

The matter has been remanded to 20 June 2025 for further investigations, while the accused remains in custody.
