Limpopo Taxi Driver Charged With Murder After Soccer Fan Allegedly Dragged To Death

A 37-year-old taxi driver from Polokwane is due to appear in court on Monday following a fatal incident at a local soccer ground in Limpopo, where a spectator was allegedly dragged by a vehicle.

The driver was arrested by Sebayeng police after the incident, which took place on Christmas Day during a soccer match in Ga-Dikgale. The victim, a 29-year-old man, later died from injuries sustained during the ordeal.

Police confirmed that officers were alerted to the incident shortly after it occurred, prompting an immediate response and subsequent investigation.

“The incident occurred on Thursday at about 4.12pm. Police received a report that a soccer spectator had been dragged by a motor vehicle during a soccer match. The 29-year-old victim sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to a local clinic for medical treatment.

“He was later transferred by ambulance to Mankweng hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His identity is currently being withheld, pending investigations.”

Soccer Match Dispute Escalates Into Fatal Incident

According to preliminary information, tensions flared among spectators during the match. It is alleged that the victim’s bag was taken amid the dispute and placed inside the suspect’s taxi.

Witnesses reported that the victim approached the driver and pleaded for the return of his belongings. The driver allegedly refused and drove away from the scene.

The victim then attempted to stop the taxi by standing in front of it. During the confrontation, he reportedly fell, was knocked down and dragged along the road as the vehicle continued moving.

Taxi Impounded as Murder Case Heads to Court

The vehicle eventually stopped on the R81 road, where the victim was left critically injured. Authorities later impounded the taxi as part of the ongoing investigation.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he will face a charge of murder.

Police investigations are continuing as officials work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
