Limpopo Police Uncover R2bn Drug Lab In Groblersdal

This week, the Limpopo police made a significant breakthrough by uncovering a massive drug lab in the Groblersdal area, with illicit drugs valued at a staggering R2bn.

The operation was lauded by Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu, who praised the efforts of the joint team comprising members of the Limpopo Hawks and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

According to a statement released on Saturday, four suspects, including the farm owner and two Mexican nationals, were arrested on Friday.

The arrests were the result of an intelligence-driven operation conducted by the Limpopo Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) team, with assistance from the Limpopo Tactical Response Team.

Ministerial spokesperson Kamogelo Mokgotsi revealed that the Hawks in Limpopo received information about suspicious activities at the farm, leading to the well-coordinated raid.

The multidisciplinary team searched four structures on the property, recovering large quantities of chemicals used in the manufacturing of illicit drugs, including acetone and crystal meth.

These substances have an estimated street value of R2bn. Mokgotsi noted that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation has uncovered ten clandestine drug laboratories and made 34 arrests since the beginning of the year.

While the investigation continues, the arrested suspects are set to make their first appearance in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

They face charges of manufacturing, dealing in, and possession of illicit drugs. Mokgotsi also mentioned that the Hawks are not ruling out the possibility of further arrests as the investigation progresses.
