R5 rifles, 9mm handguns, shotguns, and ammo were robbed from the Malamulele police station in Limpopo by a group of heavily armed gunmen.
A group of armed suspects allegedly stormed the station around 11 p.m. on Sunday and held members at gunpoint in the community service centre (CSC). Some members were dragged into the back of a police van while one was ordered to unlock the safe, where the suspects seized the weapons and an undetermined amount of ammunition, according to police spokesperson Col Athlenda Mathe.
“Following the attack on the police station, the group proceeded to a local food outlet and a filling station in the vicinity, where they robbed the businesses of an undisclosed amount of cash,” she said.
Lt-Gen Thembi Hadebe, the provincial police commissioner, and her management team inspected the crime scene and devised a 72-hour activation plan. “All roleplayers, including a multidisciplinary team consisting of crime scene experts and specialised units within the SAPS, are combing the scene and are in pursuit of the heavily armed men,” Mathe said.
She stated the station’s services, which had been momentarily disrupted by the armed robbery, are now fully operational and open to the public.
