Limpopo Man Sentenced To Life For Murder Of Elderly Employer And Friend After Revenge

A man from Mokutung village, Limpopo, has been handed two life sentences and an additional 46 years for a string of violent crimes, including the murders of his former employer and her friend.

The Polokwane High Court heard how 32-year-old Christopher Mgiba plotted for six months to kill his elderly employer, Annah Maria “Anneke” Claassen, after being dismissed for theft in 2022.

Mgiba’s employment at Echo Caves in Ohrigstad was terminated after he stole a safe key and R10,000 in cash. Seeking revenge, he returned in June 2023 to carry out his deadly plan.

Brutal Attacks and Arson in Limpopo

State advocate Calvin Chauke detailed how Mgiba ambushed Claassen, pushing her to the ground and assaulting her until she died. He attempted to open her safe using the stolen key, which broke because the locks had been changed. In an effort to cover up the crime, he set the house on fire — with her body inside.

Chauke told the court: “His conduct demonstrates cruelty, betrayal, and a complete disregard for human life.”

Not stopping there, Mgiba went on to the home of Claassen’s friend, Hendrick Gerhardus Claassen, whom he also assaulted and killed before setting his home ablaze.

Judge Orders Life Behind Bars

The court sentenced Mgiba to two life terms plus 46 years for multiple charges, including housebreaking with intent to rob, attempted robbery, arson, theft, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective life sentence.

In aggravation of sentence, Chauke argued Mgiba showed no remorse and deliberately targeted vulnerable elderly victims. “The victims trusted him. He is not a candidate for rehabilitation,” he said.
