Limpopo Man Sentenced To Life For Rape Of 101-Year-Old Woman

The Groblersdal Regional Court in Limpopo has sentenced 28-year-old Sifiso Johannes Mahlangu from Sehlakwana village in Zaaiplaas to life imprisonment for the rape of a 101-year-old woman.

In addition to the life term, Mahlangu received a further three years for housebreaking with intent to commit an offence. The sentences will run concurrently. The court also ordered that Mahlangu’s name be entered into the National Register of Sexual Offenders and declared him unfit to own a firearm.

Details of the 2024 Attack in Limpopo

The crime took place on 27 July 2024, when Mahlangu broke into the victim’s home in Zaaiplaas, raped her, and fled. He was later arrested after DNA evidence linked him to the offence.

Although he pleaded not guilty, the state presented strong evidence against him. Prosecutor Sifiso Miya submitted a victim impact report by social worker Khomolo Mufunwa, which revealed that the centenarian no longer feels safe in her home and now suffers from a deep fear of men.

“The prosecutor argued that Mahlangu is a sexual predator who deliberately preyed on a vulnerable and defenceless member of society,” NPA regional spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said.

The Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo, Advocate Ivy Thenga, applauded the outcome and praised both Miya and investigating officer Warrant Officer Phala from the Groblersdal Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

“All cases of sexual violence encroach on the rights to dignity and privacy of victims as enshrined in our Constitution,” Thenga said.

She added that the NPA remains committed to aggressively prosecuting sexual offences and ensuring justice for victims.
