Limpopo Kidnapping Sees Driefontein Man Escape Armed Suspects After Being Driven To Mpumalanga

A 33-year-old man from Driefontein village in Sekhukhune, Limpopo, made a dramatic escape after being allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint from his home and driven across provincial lines into Mpumalanga.

The incident unfolded late on Tuesday night, leaving his family shaken but unharmed. Police confirmed that four armed suspects are believed to be behind the attack.

Authorities have since opened a kidnapping case, with the matter now under investigation by a specialised provincial unit.

Armed Kidnapping in Matlelerekeng Policing Area

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the attack occurred at around 11.30pm under the Matlelerekeng policing area.

“It is reported that the male victim was inside his shack with his wife and child when four unknown male suspects broke in. Two of the suspects were allegedly armed with firearms,” said Ledwaba.

The suspects allegedly forced the man from his home and bundled him into a silver-grey Honda sedan against his will. His wife, though traumatised by the ordeal, managed to flee with their child without sustaining injuries.

Assault and Escape in Mpumalanga Province

While transporting the victim, the suspects allegedly assaulted him repeatedly with a firearm.

“The victim later managed to escape when the vehicle stopped at Koedoespoort in Mpumalanga province. He then walked through secluded routes until he safely reached his residence at about 3am on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, and immediately alerted the police,” Ledwaba said.

Despite the violence he endured, the man was able to make his way back home in the early hours of Wednesday morning before reporting the incident.

A kidnapping case was registered at Matlelerekeng police station. The investigation has since been handed over to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit.

Police say the motive behind the kidnapping remains unclear and forms part of ongoing investigations.
