A 43-year-old father has been released on R3,000 bail following a heartbreaking incident that claimed the life of a farm worker in Limpopo.

The man appeared before the Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court, facing charges of negligent handling of a firearm after his 11-year-old son allegedly fired the fatal shot.

According to reports, the boy had been attempting to hunt guinea fowl when he discharged the firearm, striking 39-year-old Frans Modise, a casual worker on a local farm.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi confirmed that Modise’s brother was at the scene and immediately called the child’s father to inform him of the tragedy.

“The father quickly contacted both the police and emergency medical services. Upon arrival, officers discovered Modise’s lifeless body on the ground, featuring a gunshot wound to the upper body,” said Malabi-Dzhangi.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting as the community reels from the devastating event.

Child Below Criminal Capacity, Says NPA

Malabi-Dzhangi further explained that under South African law, children under the age of 10 are deemed too young to be held criminally responsible.

“Consequently, the minor will not appear in court and will instead be assisted by the Department of Social Development, under the guidelines of the Child Justice Act,” she added.
