Life Imprisonment For Zimbabwean Man Who Murdered Girlfriend Over Spent Lobola Savings

The case of Louis Serenetra Moyo, a 49-year-old undocumented Zimbabwean national, has garnered significant attention following the brutal murder of his partner, Thobile Grace Khoza.

Moyo, a security guard working in South Africa, was saving money intended for lobola—a traditional bridal price—using his partner’s bank account, as he was unable to open one himself as he is undocumented.

The couple, who had been cohabiting since 2020, faced a devastating turn of events when Moyo discovered that Khoza had spent R15,000 of his savings.

Details of the Crime

The confrontation on March 12 escalated into violence, resulting in Moyo assaulting Khoza with various objects, ultimately stabbing her and leaving her to bleed to death.

Following the horrific act, Moyo fled the scene and locked the room, leading to a grisly discovery three days later when their landlord found Khoza’s decomposed body. Subsequent investigations revealed that Moyo was found in possession of Khoza’s bank card, ID, and cellphone, leading to his arrest.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

During the trial at the Johannesburg High Court, Moyo pleaded guilty to murder and admitted to the premeditated nature of his crime, which was committed in a fit of rage.

Prosecutors emphasised the senseless nature of the violence inflicted on Khoza, who had a right to feel safe. Judge Dario Dosio handed down a life sentence for the murder, alongside an additional six-month sentence for Moyo’s illegal presence in South Africa, highlighting the critical issue of gender-based violence in the country.
