The Atamelang Regional Court has sentenced Tlotlano Simon Monnatshitlo, 50, to life imprisonment for raping an 82-year-old woman.

The court’s decision was based on the overwhelming evidence presented by the prosecution.

Evidence included DNA results and the victim’s hearsay statement, which was admitted as evidence after her passing.

Brutal Crime

The victim had bravely reported the rape to her neighbors, who then summoned the police.

Despite the accused’s plea of not guilty, the court was convinced of his guilt based on the evidence.

The state’s prosecutor, Advocate Edward Manicus, argued that the court should impose the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment, given the vulnerability of the victim and the heinous nature of the crime.

Deterrent To Gender-Based Violence

The Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr. Rachel Makhari, welcomed the sentencing, stating that it serves as a crucial deterrent against perpetrators of gender-based violence in the country.
