The Verulam Regional Court has delivered a life imprisonment sentence to a 38-year-old man convicted of raping his biological daughter in January 2020.
The harrowing incident unfolded in the Ndwedwe area, KwaZulu Natal where the young girl resided with her siblings, father, and stepmother.

The victim, then a 13-year-old, endured the trauma of sexual assault during a fateful night. Her stepmother lay asleep, unaware of the horrors unfolding within their home. The perpetrator, her own father, threatened her into silence, warning that reporting him would lead to his imprisonment.
Despite the threats, the girl eventually found solace in confiding first in her stepmother and later in her mother. The incident was promptly reported, leading to the man’s arrest. The young survivor received crucial support at the Phoenix Thuthuzela Care Centre, where she underwent medical and psycho-social assistance.
During the trial, the accused vehemently denied the allegations. However, the state, represented by Prosecutor Winnie Shangase, presented compelling evidence. The girl and her stepmother testified, recounting the horrifying events. Additionally, the court reviewed the J88 form, documenting the girl’s injuries, and heard from the medical doctor who examined her.
In an emotional Victim Impact Statement, the girl expressed her disbelief and pain. She had once loved her father deeply, making the betrayal even more devastating. The incident left her embarrassed, traumatized, and shattered her self-confidence.

The court’s verdict was unequivocal: life imprisonment for the perpetrator. Furthermore, recognizing the danger he posed, the man was declared unfit to possess a firearm. His name will now be entered into the National Register of Sex Offenders.
The successful prosecution by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) sends a powerful message. We hope that sentences like these serve as a deterrent to those who would harm vulnerable individuals. The NPA remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting victims and upholding justice.
