Lesufi: Locals, Ethiopians And Malawians Linked To Mazwi Kubheka Kidnapping

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says both South Africans and foreign nationals are linked to the kidnapping of Vosloorus businessman Mazwi Kubheka.

Speaking during a media briefing, Lesufi confirmed that two Ethiopian nationals and local suspects are believed to be involved, while two Malawian nationals were allegedly guarding the location where Kubheka was held.

“We can confirm that a South African and foreign nationals are involved, including individuals of Ethiopian origin,” Lesufi said.

Mazwi Kubheka Found Alive After Month-Long Ordeal

Kubheka, 27, who went missing on April 2, has since been found alive after being released by his captors on May 2 in Ekurhuleni.

According to his family, he was left in an open veld, from where he made his way to a nearby road before being assisted by a taxi driver.

He later approached a police roadblock and was directed to the Vosloorus Police Station, where authorities contacted his family.

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude to have him back home,” the family said.

“While he is safe, Mazwi is currently in a fragile condition and is receiving medical care and emotional support.”

Lesufi Says  Motive Still Under Investigation

Lesufi said authorities are still working to determine whether the kidnapping is linked to a dispute over Kubheka’s spaza shop or broader criminal activity.

“We are looking for a combination… whether it’s related to the spaza shop or it’s just criminal activity,” he said, adding that Kubheka was taken while on his way to the bank.

He also revealed that the alleged mastermind is known to the victim and is believed to be a South African.

Authorities are further investigating claims that syndicates may be operating from hijacked buildings.

Police Urge Caution as Investigation Continues

Tommy Mthombeni, Gauteng police commissioner, said investigators have not yet confirmed a link between the kidnapping and organised spaza shop crime.

“As part of the investigation, we have not yet confirmed the involvement of spaza shop criminal syndicates,” he said.

“There are related cases we are following, but at this stage we cannot confirm a connection.”

The case had sparked protests in Vosloorus, with residents and community groups calling for Kubheka’s safe return.

Investigations remain ongoing.
