Latest Suspect Linked To Joshlin’s Disappearance Makes Confession

In a recent development, the fourth suspect linked to the disappearance of Joshlin Smith, 32-year-old Lourentia Lombaard, has made a confession to the police, as revealed in the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court.

Lombaard made her first court appearance after being arrested on charges of kidnapping and trafficking in persons for the purpose of exploitation. As she walked into the dock on Monday, the slightly built woman showed no emotion and looked back at the public gallery, stating, “I told the whole truth, I told them everything.”

The state disclosed that Lombaard had indeed made a confession to the police, but no further details were provided. Saldanha Bay residents, however, expressed acceptance of Lombaard’s confession while demanding answers regarding the whereabouts of the missing 6-year-old.

It is worth noting that Lombaard is known to Joshlin’s mother, Kelly, who also appeared in court and expressed her intention to make use of a legal aid lawyer. Lombaard is the fifth person to be arrested in connection with the case.

Previously, on March 5, the police arrested Smith, Jacquen Appolis, Steveno Rhyn, and Phumza Sigaqa on charges of human trafficking and kidnapping. However, the state later withdrew the charges against Sigaqa due to a lack of evidence.

The National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, confirmed Lombaard’s appearance in court, stating that the 32-year-old woman is charged with trafficking in persons for the purpose of exploitation and kidnapping. The case has been postponed until March 25 for bail information.

Reagen Allen, the Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC, welcomed Lombaard’s arrest, emphasizing the diligent efforts of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in investigating the case of young Joshlin Smith.

Allen called on all the suspects, including Joshlin’s mother, to provide relevant information about the child’s whereabouts to ensure her safe reunion with her siblings and extended family. Allen urged the public to refrain from speculation and hearsay, emphasizing the critical stage of the investigation.

He encouraged anyone with information to make it available to the SAPS, emphasizing the importance of finding Joshlin unharmed. Allen also warned against interference, blocking the investigation, intimidation, or politicization of the matter, stating that such actions would not be tolerated.

Outside the court, some Diazville residents expressed no surprise at Lombaard’s arrest. Diego Dietdricks stated that Lombaard had been a suspect since the beginning, with rumours circulating in the community.

Dietdricks recounted an incident where they visited Lombaard’s house and noticed her suspicious body language and stuttering. According to the information they received, Lombaard had asked Joshlin to check on her child at her place and then followed her, leading to Joshlin’s disappearance.

Despite Lombaard’s initial denial, the community is relieved that she has now confessed, indicating her involvement in the case.

Joshlin Smith, a grade 1 learner at Diazville Primary, went missing a month ago from her home in Diazville.
