KZN Woman Accused Of Gifting Stolen Jewellery To Lover In Trenance Park

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responded to a theft case on Madrona Drive, Trenance Park, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday, 15 September 2025.
Officers were called to assist after a 64-year-old semi-blind woman reported that her neighbour had borrowed a pair of gold earrings and two 18-carat gold rings in April but failed to return them.
The complainant told officers that the jewellery, which held deep sentimental value, had been given to her by her late mother in 1967 when she was just six years old. She had treasured the pieces for 59 years.
Neighbour Changes Story During Investigation
When interviewed, the neighbour initially identified herself as a 55-year-old grandmother. She admitted borrowing the jewellery for a function and later lending it to extended family. She assured officers that she would return the items after a few days.
However, by 22 September 2025, the complainant confirmed that she had still not received her jewellery. She expressed distress, explaining that the pieces were the only remembrance of her mother, who passed away 33 years ago.

Upon further questioning, the neighbour claimed the items had been handed to a Kenyan national in Phoenix, KZN, who supposedly needed them for a traditional healing ritual. She failed to provide his name or contact details.
Reaction Officers eventually traced the man, who denied using the jewellery for rituals. Instead, he revealed that he was the woman’s lover and that the jewellery had been gifted to him. He further disclosed that she was 71 years old and insisted he was unaware the items were stolen.
Reaction Officers are continuing efforts to recover the missing jewellery.
