KZN Weather Alert: Heavy Rains And Thunderstorms Bring Flooding Risk This Weekend

KwaZulu-Natal residents and motorists are being urged to remain vigilant as heavy rains and thunderstorms may sweep across the province.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has confirmed that the wet conditions are expected to persist until Sunday and could result in flooding.

According to the latest forecasts, the areas most likely to be affected include Vryheid, Nquthu, Newcastle, and Utrecht.

Authorities Warn of Flooding and Travel Hazards

The provincial Department of Cooperative Governance has issued a strong warning, advising people to stay indoors where possible and to avoid risky areas. Motorists are urged to drive carefully and refrain from attempting to cross flooded rivers or streams.

Department spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila cautioned that the heavy downpours could lead to localised flooding in some communities.

Mzila further noted that emergency teams are already on standby to respond to weather-related incidents.

“With parts of the province experiencing scattered showers as of today, MEC Buthelezi has called for vigilance and assured communities that disaster management teams are closely monitoring the weather conditions,” said Mzila.

Officials stress that safety should remain a top priority as KwaZulu-Natal braces for a wet and potentially dangerous weekend.
