KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma Cracks Down On Illegal Truck Drivers And Unroadworthy Vehicles

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has issued a stern warning to truck company owners who employ illegal migrants or operate unroadworthy vehicles. He cautioned that those found violating transport laws will face arrest under the province’s #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign.

The crackdown took place along the N3 highway in Pietermaritzburg throughout Saturday, as law enforcement officials targeted truck operators suspected of breaking the law. The operation forms part of the provincial government’s ongoing efforts to ensure road safety and compliance among heavy vehicle operators.

Duma confirmed that several arrests were made during the operation and said the results reflected the government’s strong stance on road safety. “These arrests are a clear indication of zero tolerance for fraudulent drivers and unroadworthy trucks that place everyone’s lives at risk on KZN roads,” he said.

Major Arrests in Pietermaritzburg Crackdown

The day-long operation yielded several significant arrests. Among those apprehended were three undocumented foreign nationals from Malawi. Authorities also uncovered a large-scale racket involving foreign truck drivers from Swaziland who were using fraudulent driver’s licences.

One truck was suspended after failing to meet roadworthiness standards. In another incident, a taxi driver from Mozambique was caught transporting passengers without a valid route permit. Some of the passengers were Malawians travelling from Ermelo to Durban.

Law enforcement officials also executed eight outstanding warrants of arrest, underscoring the department’s commitment to removing illegal operators from the province’s roads.

MEC Duma emphasised that the #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign would continue to clamp down on all forms of lawlessness in the transport sector. The campaign targets both employers and drivers who endanger public safety by disregarding South Africa’s road regulations.

“We will not hesitate to act against those who think they can break the law with impunity,” Duma reiterated, warning that future operations will intensify across KwaZulu-Natal.
