KZN Shoot-Out: Two Suspects Linked To Hillcrest Killings Gunned Down By Police

Two men believed to be connected to a string of violent crimes were killed during a confrontation with police in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday morning.

According to authorities, officers acted on intelligence pointing to the suspects’ location at a residence in KwaNgcolosi. When police arrived at the property, they approached a rondavel where the men were reportedly asleep.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshuinda said: “When they arrived at the rondavel house in which the suspects were sleeping, a shoot-out ensued between the police and the suspects.”

Suspects Tied to Multiple Murders, Including Elderly Woman and Teen

The two men were wanted in connection with at least four murder cases within the Hillcrest policing area.

“This includes the recent double murder of an 84-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl,” Netshuinda confirmed.

The fatal confrontation brought an end to the search for the suspects, who had been linked to a series of violent incidents in the area.

Despite the intensity of the exchange, no officers were wounded during the operation.

“Two suspects were shot and fatally wounded during the shoot-out,” said Netshuinda.

Authorities have since opened cases of attempted murder against the deceased suspects as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Brutal Khumalo Family Killings Lead to Heavy Sentences

In a separate development, three men have been handed a combined 14 life sentences along with an additional 121 years behind bars for a string of murders targeting members of the Khumalo family.

Netshiunda said the accused — Andile Wonderboy Ngcobo, Andile Sabelo Shezi and Mongezi Nyathi — were sentenced in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

Authorities revealed that the violence began on 3 October 2021 when the trio robbed a man of his firearm in Pietermaritzburg. Just weeks later, three Khumalo brothers were ambushed and shot in Imbali Unit J in Plessislaer. Two died at the scene, while one survived.

Investigators from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit later arrested the suspects for illegal possession of firearms. Ballistic testing linked the weapons to the murders, leading to formal charges.

Witnesses Targeted in Chilling Killing Spree

As the case progressed, the violence escalated with a calculated attempt to eliminate witnesses.

“As the case was proceeding, the third of the Khumalo brothers, the one who witnessed and survived the shooting, was with his friend when they were both shot and killed. A day later, the parents of the Khumalo brothers were also shot and killed.

“The suspects’ elimination of witnesses continued when they killed the sole remaining witness who was the sister to the slain Khumalo brothers. She was killed at a party in an incident in which three more people were also shot and killed at Emaqeleni area at Imbali Unit J.”

KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi praised investigators for their work in securing convictions.

“The murders instilled fear among the community of Plessislaer and the capacity of police in dealing with serious crimes was questioned. Where prevention was not possible, police’s reactive capacity must bring justice and closure to the families of the victims.

We also appreciate the hefty sentences handed down by the court. This shows that cooperation between police, the prosecution and judiciary can go a long way in strengthening the authority of the state”, said Lt Gen Mkhwanazi.
