KZN Prosecutor Arrested For Drunk Driving As Crackdown Intensifies

A 44-year-old public prosecutor in KwaZulu-Natal was arrested for alleged drunk driving on Friday night, bringing the total number of motorists nabbed that evening to 54.

The prosecutor, who has not yet appeared in court, allegedly recorded 0.83 mg/l in an alcohol breath test—four times over the legal limit. She was stopped on the R620 Marine Drive in Margate at around 11pm.

Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma praised the officers involved: “We are encouraged by the determination by our highly dedicated and efficient members of the road traffic inspectorate.”

KZN’s Zero-Tolerance Campaign Against Drunk Driving

The arrest forms part of the province’s “Alufakwa KwaZulu-Natal” campaign, a no-nonsense initiative targeting reckless drinking and driving.

Duma said the campaign was not only about enforcement but also about sparking wider conversations.

“Hopefully, the latest arrest will ignite the conversation about the contribution of the legal fraternity in curbing road fatalities caused by binge drinking,” said Sibiya.

He emphasised that alcohol abuse was devastating families and leaving “orphans, widows and a trail of destruction.”

The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) has arrested more than 130 motorists for drinking and driving in just two weeks. On Friday night alone, arrests were spread across:

eThekwini: 21

Pietermaritzburg: 18

Ladysmith: 14

Empangeni: 1

Duma stressed that law enforcement could not solve the problem alone.

“Based on these figures, we have to acknowledge the department alone has no chance of dealing a permanent blow to road accidents caused by drinking and driving.”

He urged the public to take responsibility and help change South Africa’s pervasive binge-drinking culture.
