KZN Police Officer Suspended For Alleged Political Party Links, Mkhwanazi Cracks Down

KZN Police Officer Suspended For Alleged Political Party Links, Mkhwanazi Cracks Down

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has suspended a police officer accused of wearing political party regalia and participating in political activities, a direct violation of the SAPS Code of Conduct.

The unnamed officer’s suspension follows a series of similar cases in the province, sparking fresh concerns about political infiltration within the police ranks.

SAPS Confirms Probe

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe said the matter is under investigation to determine the extent of the misconduct.

“SAPS remains impartial and will not tolerate behavior that compromises our integrity,” Mathe stated.

The probe is expected to conclude within 60 days, with possible further disciplinary action if the allegations are substantiated.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the officer violated Section 46 of the SAPS Act, which bans members from associating with political organisations.
This includes:

  • Wearing political party clothing or insignia
  • Holding office in a political structure
  • Publicly endorsing political parties

“Police officers are expected to remain apolitical and neutral at all times. Any association with a political party has the potential to bring the organisation into disrepute,” said Netshiunda.

Security Company Allegations

In a twist, Netshiunda revealed that PSIRA (Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority) has been roped in to investigate claims the officer also owns a security company offering VIP protection services.

This would be another serious violation, as SAPS members are prohibited from operating in the security, alcohol, or taxi industries.

The suspension comes days after another disciplinary scandal in Estcourt, where police officers were accused of using an official vehicle to escort a learner to a matric dance while on duty.

Mkhwanazi has urged communities to report officers engaging in politics or illicit side businesses, warning that such conduct undermines the integrity of the police service.
