KZN Police Officer Surrenders Himself To Hawks Over Murder Of Crime Intelligence Official

A KwaZulu-Natal police officer has surrendered to the Hawks following the shocking murder of 29-year-old Constable Sbonelo Ngidi, a member of the Crime Intelligence unit.

Ngidi was gunned down on Friday night in Mariannhill, west of Durban, after a confrontation with a suspect who had allegedly blocked the road.

Fatal Confrontation in Mariannhill

According to reports, Ngidi—who was off duty at the time—encountered a man urinating near his car and asked him to move his vehicle to allow him to pass. The situation quickly escalated when the suspect allegedly approached Ngidi’s car and opened fire, striking him multiple times.

Despite his passenger’s desperate attempt to rush him to a nearby hospital, Ngidi succumbed to his injuries. He had sustained several gunshot wounds to his upper body.

Hawks Confirm Surrender and Upcoming Court Appearance

Hawks spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo confirmed that a police officer attached to the operational response services had handed himself over to detectives in Durban in connection with the murder.

“The suspect had evaded arrest on Thursday,” Mhlongo said. Police had launched an intensive manhunt to trace Ngidi’s killer before the suspect turned himself in on Friday.

The officer has since been charged with murder and is expected to appear in court on Monday.
