KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Set For Contract Renewal Amid Ongoing Scrutiny

KwaZulu‑Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant‑General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is poised to remain in his post after national police authorities confirmed his contract will be extended for another term.

The current contract was due to expire at the end of March, but Fannie Masemola, head of the South African Police Service (SAPS), said discussions to finalise the details are underway and that Mkhwanazi will continue to serve as provincial commissioner.

Masemola said the renewal follows an agreement with the KwaZulu‑Natal provincial government, with Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli endorsing the decision earlier this year, signalling political support for Mkhwanazi’s leadership.

Controversial Figure at Centre of Crime and Corruption Probes

Mkhwanazi’s tenure has been marked by both praise and controversy. Known for his tough‑on‑crime approach in one of South Africa’s most violent provinces, he has won public support from some quarters for his aggressive crime‑fighting strategies.

However, his leadership has also been contentious. In mid‑2025, Mkhwanazi made explosive allegations against senior police leadership, accusing Senzo Mchunu and other officials of political interference, shielding criminal networks, and undermining investigations into high‑profile cases. These claims reverberated across the country and prompted national attention.

Those allegations contributed to the establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, a judicial probe tasked with examining claims of corruption and political influence in the criminal justice system. The commission, chaired by retired judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga, has been extended several times and is expected to continue hearings into 2026 as it gathers evidence from a range of witnesses.

Mkhwanazi Faces Parliamentary Scrutiny and Legal Challenges Ahead

Despite the endorsement of his contract renewal, Mkhwanazi continues to face criticism and legal challenges. Recent reports indicate that he is expected to return to Parliament’s ad hoc committee this week to address allegations surrounding internal power struggles and claims of torture linked to the SAPS.

In addition, Mkhwanazi has been embroiled in a separate perjury case after retracting allegations he made against former police minister Bheki Cele, which led to criminal perjury charges being filed by a Member of Parliament.

He has also publicly called on lawmakers to consider endorsing stronger surveillance powers against journalists and increased measures against what he terms misinformation, a stance that drew international concern from media protection bodies earlier last year.
