KZN Police Commissioner Calls For Social Solutions To Combat Crime

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has emphasized the need to address the social problems underlying the recent surge in violent crime in Amaoti, north of Durban.

Six people were killed, including two suspected of being involved in a shooting spree over the weekend.

Mkhwanazi stressed that a knee-jerk reaction would not suffice, and instead, a comprehensive approach is required to tackle the root causes of crime.

Amaoti’s Socio-Economic Challenges

Amaoti, considered the largest informal settlement in KwaZulu-Natal, grapples with significant socio-economic challenges.

The area has amongst the highest unemployment, poverty, orphaned and vulnerable children rates.

Non-profit organizations working in the area report that over 60% of children living on the streets of Durban come from Amaoti.

These challenges create a fertile ground for criminal activity, creating the need for a holistic solution.

Community Policing And Social Interventions

To address the immediate concerns, the police are setting up a police station in Amaoti, sponsored by a private donor.

Also, cameras will be installed in the community to enhance safety.

However, Mkhwanazi emphasized that these measures are only part of the solution.

He called for a collaborative effort between all departments to develop a social solution that addresses unemployment, school attendance, and living conditions.

He said, “by tackling these underlying issues, the community can be empowered to resist the influence of criminal elements.”

Call To Action

The recent spate of violence in Amaoti has sparked widespread concern and outrage.

While the police have taken steps to address the immediate situation, it is clear that a more comprehensive approach is required.

As Mkhwanazi noted, addressing crime without solving the underlying social issues will not provide a long-term solution.

“It is important that all stakeholders, including government departments, community organizations, and private sector entities, work together to develop a sustainable solution to Amaoti’s socio-economic challenges.”
