KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Secures Second Term Amid Ongoing Scrutiny

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will remain in his position after his contract was officially renewed, ending weeks of uncertainty about his future in the role.

His initial term as the province’s top cop was due to conclude in March, prompting speculation over whether he would continue leading the police service in the province.

The confirmation comes after a period marked by controversy, including Mkhwanazi’s claims in July 2025 alleging political interference within the police. Those allegations are currently being examined by both a commission of inquiry and Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee.

KZN Police Leadership Confirmed As Premier Announces Renewal

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli confirmed Mkhwanazi’s reappointment during a crime-fighting event held in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.

“It has been renewed, the national commissioner has written to me, and I’ve also given a concurrence formally and officially, so I don’t think there is an issue with that,” Ntuli said.

The announcement brings clarity after a month of speculation surrounding whether Mkhwanazi would continue in the high-profile role.

Crime Crackdown And Political Killings Unit Highlight First Term

During his first term, Mkhwanazi oversaw intensified efforts to combat crime across KwaZulu-Natal, targeting serious offences such as murder, robbery, drug trafficking and cash-in-transit heists.

A key feature of his tenure has been the establishment of the Political Killing Task Team (PKTT), which has been credited with addressing cases involving the killings of politicians and traditional leaders.

The specialised unit has received praise for its role in tackling politically motivated violence in the province, a longstanding concern in KwaZulu-Natal.
