KZN Monster Son Jailed For Life After Attacking And Raping His Own Mother

A 32-year-old man from northern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) will spend the rest of his days behind bars following a horrific assault on his own mother.

The Ngwelezane Regional Court handed down a life sentence plus an additional 10 years on Thursday, marking a decisive end to a case that stunned the Nseleni community near Empangeni. The incident, which took place on 1 December 2024, involved a violent physical and sexual assault within the family’s shared homestead.

Details of the 2024 KZN Rape Trial

The court heard how the assailant confronted his mother in her rondavel late at night while she was resting with her young granddaughter. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara detailed the harrowing moments:

“On the evening of December 1 2024, the complainant was lying in bed with her minor granddaughter when the accused knocked on her door. Upon opening it, the accused began shouting at her, accusing her of speaking about him to other people.”

Despite her pleas of innocence, the man turned violent.

“Despite her denial, he made threatening remarks and proceeded to undress before physically assaulting her by slapping and punching her. He then forced her onto the bed and raped her, in the presence of the minor child.”

The victim managed to escape the premises by tricking her attacker, claiming she needed water. She and the child then fled to the safety of a nearby home under the cover of darkness.

Thuthuzela Care Centres Provide Vital Support

While the victim initially hesitated to share the full trauma due to the sensitive nature of the crime, she eventually sought justice with the help of relatives. Following a report to the police, she received essential medical and psychological aid at the Ngwelezane Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC).

The perpetrator’s attempt to evade the law ended two weeks later when his own cousins tracked him down and delivered him to the authorities. During the trial, prosecutor Russell Sithembile Mngoma presented a powerful case using testimony from the victim, the investigating officer, and medical experts.

A victim impact statement, prepared by officer Seneliso Magdalene Sibanda, captured the mother’s devastation, noting she felt “horrified and deeply violated” and “never imagined her own child would commit such an act against her.”

The NPA highlighted that their ability to prosecute such cases is bolstered by the increasing number of TCCs nationwide. Ramkisson-Kara noted:

“The NPA’s fight against sexual violence has been aided by the expansion of the TCC footprint around the country, which has grown from 55 TCCs in 2020/2021 to 66 TCCs at present. These centres provide comprehensive services and critical support to victims of sexual violence.”

The court ruled that the man’s sentences will run concurrently.
