KZN Man Sentenced To Life For Raping 6-Year-Old Neighbour

A 58-year-old man from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has been sentenced to life in prison for raping his six-year-old neighbour in Osizweni, Newcastle, in October 2018.

The sentence was handed down in the Madadeni Regional Court on Monday.

Heinous Crime Sparks Outrage

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the man lured the little girl into his house by asking her to buy cigarettes for him.

He then grabbed her and raped her, threatening to kill her and her family if she told anyone about the incident.

The girl remained silent for a week, fearing for her life, until her grandmother noticed a change in her behaviour and took her to the Madadeni Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC), where the rape was confirmed.

Justice Served, But A Long Road To Healing

The NPA welcomed the sentence, saying it demonstrated the justice cluster’s commitment to fighting sexual offences and gender-based violence.

State Prosecutor Cindy Alberts handed in a Victim Impact Statement (VIS) compiled by the girl’s mother, detailing the significant impact the incident had on the child’s academic, emotional, and physical well-being.

The court also ordered the man’s name to be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Although justice has been served, the road to healing for the young victim and her family will be long and arduous.
