KZN Home Invasions Leave One Dead, Another Injured

A 45-year-old Durban man was shot and killed during a home invasion in Sarnia, Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netsuinda confirmed that Pinetown SAPS is investigating house robbery and murder after two armed suspects broke into the victim’s home.

“It is reported that in the early hours of this morning, a family was sleeping when they heard noise inside the house and noticed two armed men,” said Netsuinda.

Victim Fatally Shot, Family Robbed

According to police, the victim’s wife woke up when she heard a noise in the lounge and went to investigate. She screamed upon seeing the intruders, which alerted her husband.

The armed men opened fire, shooting the 45-year-old victim in the chest, before stealing two cellphones, laptops, house keys, and a Toyota Corolla. The robbers reportedly gained entry by jumping over a fence or gate and accessing the home through a window.

ALS Paramedics Medical Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said emergency teams arrived to find police already on the scene.

“Advanced Life Support Paramedics worked to stabilize him, but he went into a state of cardiac arrest. Despite resuscitation attempts, his injuries were too severe, and he was declared deceased on the scene,” Jamieson said.

“Paramedics assessed the patient and found the man, believed to be in his 40s, had sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and was in a critical condition,” said Jamieson. Despite attempts to resuscitate the victim, his injuries were too severe, and he was declared dead at the scene.

Another Invasion in Chatsworth

Last Thursday, another violent home invasion occurred in Chatsworth, where a man in his 40s was killed, and his father, in his 60s, was shot and injured.

Both incidents have sparked concerns over rising home invasions in KwaZulu-Natal. Authorities are investigating but have not yet confirmed if the crimes are linked.
