KZN Health:Ombudsman Investigates 258 New Complaints Amid Growing Concerns Of Negligence

Over the last nine months, the Ombuds Office has received 258 new complaints, with a concerning 41 still under investigation.

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) continues to grapple with severe challenges within its healthcare system, with the province remaining at the forefront of complaints reported to the Health Ombudsman.

These complaints, some dating back several years, raised significant issues of negligence and substandard care within KZN’s hospitals.

Health Ombudsman Investigates Serious Negligence Cases

The Health Ombudsman’s office is investigating a number of high-risk and extreme complaints that include allegations of serious negligence among hospital staff.

Among these are claims related to complications during labor and delivery, as well as postoperative issues, including sepsis and death.

In addition, there are numerous reports of maternal and neonatal deaths, raising alarms over the quality of healthcare services in the province.

The Ombuds Office has confirmed that investigations into 16 high-risk cases from previous years are ongoing.

Despite the ongoing efforts of the Health Ombudsman to address these issues, the extent of medical negligence in KZN’s healthcare system continues to grow.

High Medical Negligence Claims Impact Provincial Health Budget

KZN’s healthcare system is also facing a significant financial crisis, with the province reporting R29 billion in medical negligence claims during the last financial year, the highest in the country.

These costly claims continue to drain the province’s healthcare budget, making it more difficult to address systemic issues in hospitals and healthcare facilities.

The combination of mounting complaints and escalating negligence claims points to a larger crisis within KZN’s health sector.

The financial strain caused by these negligence claims has led to calls for urgent reform within the health department to ensure that resources are used more effectively to improve the quality of patient care, while also addressing the growing number of complaints.

DA Criticizes eThekwini Healthcare Facilities

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been vocal in its criticism of the province’s healthcare system, particularly healthcare facilities in eThekwini.

The party’s Health spokesperson in KZN, Dr. Imraan Keeka said, the appalling conditions in metro-run hospitals, such as Wentworth Hospital and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Keeka criticized the inefficiency and long waiting times, with patients reportedly waiting up to two days to receive care at these facilities.

The DA argues that despite the funding these hospitals receive from the provincial government, the quality of care remains substandard.

“A turnaround plan must be developed by the Department of Health, with clear funding allocated for improving these facilities.

The urgent need to direct funding towards patient care, medicines, and quality services has never been more pressing,” Dr. Keeka stated.

Calls For Reform And Accountability In KZN’s Healthcare System

In light of these growing concerns, Dr. Keeka has called for increased accountability within the health department.

The DA spokesperson emphasized the need to root out ghost workers and reassess staffing and resource allocations across KZN’s health facilities.

He also urged the Treasury to properly allocate funds to rectify the situation and improve healthcare standards.

Without significant reforms, the health sector in KZN will continue to face difficulties in addressing the rising costs of medical negligence and the deteriorating quality of patient care.

As Dr. Keeka warned, “the time for change is now, or the province risks further systemic collapse.”
