Senona has been accused of maintaining close contact with Matlala, who faces criminal charges. Their communication was highlighted in WhatsApp exchanges previously placed before the commission, which is probing allegations of police corruption.

Matlala reportedly told investigators that Senona was his brother-in-law and had assisted him in securing a R360 million South African Police Service (SAPS) tender. However, the commission has not received evidence proving any familial relationship between the two.

Documents presented included confidential material Matlala allegedly sent to Senona, such as a background check on the Senzo Mchunu Foundation and identity numbers said to be linked to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The exchanges also referenced business matters involving Senona’s son, Thato.

Property Deal Discussions Add to Suspicion

Testimony from Witness X revealed that Matlala appeared to be facilitating, or possibly purchasing, a property for Thato Senona.

The WhatsApp messages detailed Matlala requesting Thato’s Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) documents from Senona in relation to an offer to purchase.

The commission is continuing to unpack the extent and nature of the relationship between Senona and Matlala as evidence unfolds.
