KZN Hawks Boss Lesetja Senona Told To Vacate Office as Probe Into His Conduct Deepens

The head of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, Major-General Lesetja Senona, has confirmed that he was instructed to leave his office while an investigation into his conduct is underway.

Despite being asked to vacate his workspace, Senona remains employed by the Hawks and has not been formally suspended, according to confirmations attributed to the unit.

Office Cleared Out During Ongoing Investigation

According to a report by the SABC, Senona said the instruction to vacate his office came directly from KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Senona further claimed that some of his official work equipment was confiscated as part of the process.

The Hawks have since clarified that while Senona has been asked to step aside from his office, his employment status remains unchanged.

Madlanga Commission Report Places Lesetja Senona Under Spotlight

The development follows the release of the Madlanga Commission’s interim report, which flagged concerns about Senona’s alleged associations with controversial tender businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

The report also raised questions about the handling of confidential police documents and recommended further investigation into the conduct of several senior police officials.

Submissions made to President Cyril Ramaphosa proposed that Senona, alongside Major-General Richard Shibiri, Brigadier Mbangwa Nkhwashu, Brigadier Rachel Matjeng and Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, be investigated and potentially prosecuted for alleged misconduct.

Tender Allegations and Firm Denials

Senona has been accused of using his senior position to assist Matlala in securing state contracts, including a R360-million SAPS healthcare tender awarded to Matlala’s company, Medicare24.

He also faces allegations linked to a separate property deal said to involve his son.

During his testimony before the Madlanga Commission, Senona rejected all accusations, insisting there was no evidence to support the claims.

“I have never used my position or influence to secure any commercial opportunities for my son through Mr Matlala, nor have I abused my power or benefited him in any way,” Senona told the commission, adding that no proof had been presented to substantiate the claims.

“I wish to state that I have no financial interest in any of Mr Matlala’s business operations, whether involving my son or any other individual.”

The investigation into Senona’s conduct is continuing.
