KZN Groups Demand Justice In Massive Durban Protest After Twins Fall Down Lift Shaft

Outrage continues to grow in KwaZulu-Natal following a devastating accident that claimed the life of seven-year-old Aphelele Dlamini and left his twin sister, Aphile, fighting for her life. The twins fell into a lift shaft at the building where they lived in Durban’s CBD last week.

In response, thousands of concerned citizens flooded Durban’s streets on Monday, demanding justice and accountability. Protesters say the tragedy highlights ongoing safety failures in the city’s residential buildings, and they are determined not to let this case go unresolved.

Calls for Accountability After Previous Incidents Ignored

Leading the charge was March in March movement leader, Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, who voiced the community’s deep frustration:

“That is what people are worried about — that it is not the first time an incident of this nature happened. In 2023, there was a similar incident of this nature and there were no answers given and it is 2025 now, there’s the same thing happening again.”

Representing the ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal, Nkululeko Mfeka urged authorities to act swiftly and transparently:

“We must have an immediate intervention on this for justice to be served as quickly as possible for the families and we want timeframes and promises that will be thrown without timeframes.”

Protesters vowed to continue their efforts until those responsible are held to account, insisting that safety standards and building inspections in Durban must be prioritised to prevent another tragedy.
