KZN Education To Suspend Teacher Caught Slapping A Pupil In Classroom, Video

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education is preparing to suspend a teacher from Dr Joseph Shabalala Secondary School in Ladysmith after a disturbing video surfaced. The footage shows the teacher slapping several boys in front of their classmates.

Following the incident, the teacher reportedly took leave.

Education: Corporal Punishment Banned in South African Schools

Corporal punishment has been outlawed in South African schools since 1997, yet incidents continue to surface. Authorities have repeatedly warned that any form of physical discipline is illegal and unacceptable in the classroom.

KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka, along with senior officials, visited the school on Wednesday to address the incident and reassure learners and parents.

“The safety and dignity of learners is our top priority, and we will act decisively against anyone who undermines that,” Hlomuka said.
