KZN Disaster Teams On High Alert As Heavy Rains Persist

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Disaster management teams remain on high alert as heavy rains and severe thunderstorms continue until Tuesday.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 5 warning for intensified rainfall and thunderstorms, which could lead to flooding, road closures, and further devastation.

This warning follows recent floods in eThekwini, which claimed 11 lives, destroyed homes, and caused widespread infrastructure damage.

Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has urged residents in low-lying areas and those near riverbanks to seek shelter on higher ground immediately.

“Residents are advised to avoid all non-essential travel and remain indoors where possible. We are deeply concerned about the potential impact of these severe thunderstorms, especially after the tragic loss of lives due to recent extreme weather,” said Buthelezi.

Meanwhile, The eThekwini Municipality is also engaging with the families of the deceased to assist with funeral arrangements.

Also, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has warned motorists to brace for severe weather conditions and take necessary precautions to avoid accidents and fatalities.

“We urge motorists travelling to KZN to check weather forecasts before their journeys and to avoid travelling at night where possible. Your safety is our priority—one life lost on the road is one too many,” said RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane.

Multiple government departments and humanitarian organisations are working together to provide aid and assess damages.

Toyota South Africa

However, Infrastructure damage assessments are ongoing, with authorities determining the budget required for repairs and recovery efforts.

“We urge residents to avoid dumping waste in drainage systems, as this worsens flooding and infrastructure damage,” said municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana.

To prevent further flooding, eThekwini teams are conducting public awareness campaigns on proper waste disposal and the impact of blocked stormwater drainage systems.
