KZN Church Bus Crash Death Toll Rises To Nine

Nine people have died following a devastating bus crash on the KZN North Coast, with authorities still investigating the cause.
The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon when an 82-seater bus carrying churchgoers lost control and crashed on the N2 between Richards Bay and Shaka’s Kraal at around 4 p.m. The bus belonged to Pontys Transport, a Tongaat-based company.

Possible Tyre Failure Behind Bus Crash
According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), preliminary reports suggest that a tyre failure may have led to the driver losing control.
“The bus subsequently went through a crash barrier, plunged down an embankment, and overturned,” said RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane. However, he emphasized that the precise cause is still under investigation.

Casualties and Injuries
The crash claimed the lives of six women, one man, and a four-year-old toddler. Authorities have not yet released details on the ninth victim.
The KZN Department of Transport confirmed that
- Four people sustained serious injuries
- 35 passengers suffered minor injuries
- 12 people escaped unharmed
Investigations into the tragic incident are ongoing.
