KwaBhaca Man Sentenced To Life And 63 Years For Brutal Murder, Kidnapping And Robbery
The Mthatha High Court has sentenced 29-year-old Someleze Mazwi, from Papani locality in KwaBhaca, to life imprisonment plus 63 years for a series of violent crimes, including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and robbery.
The case stems from a chilling incident in July 2023 when two men from Badibanise locality went missing. Within days, one was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head, while the other survived after being shot multiple times and was admitted to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital.
Police investigations quickly uncovered Mazwi’s role in the crimes, linking him to the brazen attack.
Witness Murdered Amidst Investigations
A key witness, who had provided crucial information about the case, was gunned down just three days after giving a statement to police. Despite the intimidation, the surviving victim’s eventual recovery provided vital evidence that pushed the case forward.
On 15 March 2024, Mazwi was arrested in KwaBhaca with an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in his possession. He was denied bail and remained behind bars until trial.
His alleged accomplice never stood trial, as he was killed during a separate business robbery in Mqanduli before his arrest.

Investigations revealed that the motive for the murder and attempted murder was the robbery of a Toyota Corolla, which the victims were using as a cab.
Mazwi’s conviction was secured thanks to the thorough work of the OR Tambo Detectives Task Team, led by Captain Maliwa.
The Mthatha High Court handed down the following sentences: Murder—life imprisonment, attempted murder—20 years, two counts of kidnapping—20 years, robbery—15 years, possession of unlicensed firearm and unition—8 yeyears
All the sentences, totaling 63 years, will run concurrently with the life sentence.
