Kuils River Rugby Player Joshua Afrika Dies After Collapsing At Training Camp

A Kuils River family is reeling after the sudden death of their son, who collapsed during a rugby training session on 7 February 2026.

Joshua Afrika, 24, was attending a weekend training camp in Riebeek-Kasteel when he fell ill on the field. Despite efforts to assist him, he passed away that afternoon, leaving loved ones and teammates in shock.

Described as a devoted Christian, committed sportsman and community mentor, Joshua’s passing has sparked deep grief across the rugby and church communities where he played an active role.

Rugby Community Pays Tribute to Promising Brackenfell Player

Joshua was a member of the elite squad at Brackenfell Rugby Football Club, where he was regarded as a player of character and promise. The club shared a heartfelt message on Facebook following the news.

“Joshua was part of our elite squad and attended the recent team-building weekend. He was a young man of great character, commitment, and promise.

“Joshua will be remembered not only for his involvement in the club, but for the person he was and the impact he had on those around him.”

Beyond his club commitments, Joshua also invested in young players as coach of the Under-19 rugby team at De Kuilen High School, his former school. He was passionate about developing talent and giving back to the rugby structures that shaped him.

At the time of his death, he was in his second year of Sport Science studies at ETA College in Stellenbosch.

Church and Family Mourn ‘A Giant of a Young Man’

Joshua served in youth leadership at Cape Town Christian Fellowship and was a drummer in the church choir. Ahead of his memorial service, the church paid tribute online:

“[We mourn] the loss of a vibrant soul, son, brother, friend, a gifted musician, coach, rugby player and youth leader – Joshua Afrika. Joshua didn’t just play the drums; he served The Lord with every beat.”

His father, Elroy Afrika, said the family is struggling to process the sudden loss.

“It is extremely tough, but we are managing to get through one day and one moment at a time and just holding onto God’s love and grace towards us.

“We are embracing the fact that we had the wonderful opportunity to raise such a remarkably brilliant son. It is an absolute void that is left beyond any words.”

He explained that the team had travelled to Riebeek-Kasteel for a weekend training camp. “They were on a training camp in Riebeek-Kasteel for a weekend, and when they went onto the field for a training session in the afternoon of 7 February 2026, he just collapsed.

“There is no indication of what went wrong yet. The autopsy was completed, which revealed that all his organs are in a very healthy state. So they now have to do microscopic analysis to understand if there was anything wrong and determine what could have been the cause.”

Elroy described his son as someone who cherished time at home and among loved ones.

“Joshua loved being at home with family and being amongst loved ones.

“I think he would’ve, of course, moved out when he got married.

“People who encountered Joshua and his character always validated him as a legend, and he always used to say to us, ‘I am legend’. He was a giant of a young man.”

Joshua was engaged to be married and had been building a future rooted in faith, sport and service.

A BackaBuddy campaign has since been launched by friends, aiming to raise R30 000 to assist the family financially during this difficult time.
