Knysna Social Worker Dies After Tree Falls On Vehicle During Deadly Storm

A social worker from Knysna died after a tree fell onto her vehicle during severe weather conditions in the area on Wednesday.

Lauren Fredericks, 37, was on duty conducting assessments when the incident occurred.

Family spokesperson Kelly Martin said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.

“She was originally from Atlantis, and her loss is felt from the Garden Route to the West Coast by all who knew and loved her. She was a deeply compassionate and dedicated social worker who spent her life helping and supporting others. She touched many lives through her kindness, strength, and commitment to her community,” Martin said.

Knysna Family Remembers Dedicated Community Worker

Martin said Fredericks was carrying out assessments linked to the adverse weather conditions when she lost her life.

“What happened was sudden and heartbreaking, and we are still trying to come to terms with it. She leaves behind her young son, Miguel, 10, and her husband, Frankie, who meant everything to her,” Martin said.

The family has asked members of the public not to share graphic videos or images related to the incident on social media.

“We would like people to remember her not only for the tragic circumstances of her passing, but for the incredible person she was, the care she gave so selflessly to others, and the difference she made in so many people’s lives,” Martin said.

Western Cape Department Of Social Development Pays Tribute

Jaco Londt expressed condolences to Fredericks’ family, friends and colleagues.

Londt said Fredericks joined the Department of Social Development’s Knysna office as a social auxiliary worker in August 2021 and was part of the office’s disaster management response team.

“Ms Fredericks, who joined the DSD Knysna office as a social auxiliary worker in August 2021, was on her way to conduct assessments of residents who were evacuated in the area due to adverse weather conditions. Shortly after stopping, a tree fell on the car,” Londt said.

“I am deeply saddened by this loss. Ms Fredericks had a love for community work and was part of the office’s disaster management response team. Our thoughts are with her family – particularly her young son – friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”

He also acknowledged frontline workers assisting communities affected by the ongoing adverse weather conditions.
