Watch| Outrage As Knysna High Pupil Caught Using K-Word Racial Slur

A Knysna High School pupil has sparked national outrage after a video surfaced showing her using the apartheid-era K-word in an aggressive confrontation with black classmates.

The video, which quickly went viral, shows the pupil verbally attacking peers who were singing, triggering widespread condemnation on social media and reigniting debates around racism in South African schools.

Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond strongly condemned the behaviour, stressing that “the actions of the learners do not reflect the values and ethos of the school.”

Knysna Pupil Investigated

Knysna High School has since launched a formal investigation to identify all pupils involved, including the student who recorded and shared the video. Principal Mark Mosdell confirmed that disciplinary procedures are being followed.

“A disciplinary hearing will be convened, and counselling support has been made available for those affected by the incident,” Mosdell said. He explained that the school’s process includes interviews with all parties before the case is handed over to the School Governing Body for a formal hearing.

Mosdell emphasised that corrective action would be prioritised to guide learners toward better choices in the future. “The school does not tolerate this type of behaviour and we strongly condemn all acts of racism,” he said.

Restorative Measures

In addition to disciplinary action, Knysna High School has initiated dialogue with student leaders to address concerns and foster unity. Although initial meetings were delayed due to scheduling conflicts, Mosdell assured parents and the community that they will take place.

He also called for measured engagement, cautioning against the polarisation often seen on social media. “We must avoid binary conversations that misrepresent the complexity of individuals and situations,” he added.

As the investigation continues, the incident has placed a spotlight on the urgent need for anti-racism education and restorative practices in South Africa’s schools.
