King Misuzulu Halts Ingonyama Trust Board Forum Amid Leadership Tensions

Tensions between the AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and the Ingonyama Trust Board have intensified after the King abruptly halted a planned three-day strategic engagement forum.
The meeting, organised for traditional authorities, was stopped after King Misuzulu said he had not been informed despite being the Trust’s Chairperson.

As the sole trustee of the Ingonyama Trust—which oversees nearly 3 million hectares of communal land in KwaZulu-Natal—the King’s intervention brought the gathering to an immediate standstill.
The forum had been set to focus on issues relating to land administration, governance, and development across the province.
King Misuzulu – Leadership Dispute Escalates
The King’s decision to halt the proceedings has fuelled ongoing disagreements over authority within the Trust. His concerns over the lack of consultation created confusion among traditional leaders who had already assembled for the meeting.
Many expressed the need for dialogue to restore cohesion and protect the Trust’s role in supporting rural communities.

AmaZulu Prime Minister Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi said, “This meeting called by Ingonyama Trust Board has just collapsed because Amakhosi refused to participate in a meeting where His Majesty as the chairperson of the board and sole trustee was not consulted, but most concerning is that even the Minister of Land Reform Mzwanele Nyontsho was not aware of this meeting.”
Buthelezi added that the Minister has launched an investigation into the Ingonyama Trust Board’s operations following allegations of mismanagement and governance lapses.
Governance Concerns and Political Pressure
Responding to these developments, Ingonyama Trust CEO Siyamdumisa Vilakazi challenged the legality of actions attributed to the Minister. “The letter, if it is indeed correct, that was read today by the traditional prime minister, is veering in the place of illegality.
“Because the minister has no power to actually put the board on special leave if there is meant to be some action a consultation with the minister of finance in accordance with the PFMA is required because it is the minister of finance who has the power to impute anyone else to replace the board in instances where the board is either unable to execute its functions or it is non-existent in that particular place.”
The Ingonyama Trust Board said the forum was intended to address land reform challenges, financial management issues, and governance concerns with traditional authorities. The Board maintains that some of its difficulties stem from political interference.
