King Misuzulu Forgives Senzo Mchunu Over Shocking Palace Raid

Zulu monarch King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has revealed that he has chosen to forgive suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, despite being deeply hurt by a police raid conducted at his Mashobeni Palace earlier this year.

Speaking for the first time about the incident at a reconciliation imbizo held on Wednesday, the king told the Zulu nation that his residence had been stormed by police officers — including National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and Mchunu himself.

The monarch said he was shocked and saddened by the unprecedented act, noting that such an intrusion had never occurred during the reign of his late father, King Goodwill Zwelithini.

“Police raided my palace here and were accompanied by those who are in charge of the country, and that’s why they are in these problems today,” Misuzulu said. “It cannot be that the police ministry is run like this. We always regarded the police as our protectors, but now they are criminals. There are good officers, but it pains me that rogue ones are creating a bad name for them.”

King Misuzulu’s Gesture of Forgiveness Amid Scandal

The king’s remarks come after Mchunu was implicated in allegations of corruption and misconduct raised before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and a parliamentary investigation.

Misuzulu told his audience that he had decided to let go of his anger, saying that as Mchunu now faces serious challenges, it was not his place to strike a man who had already fallen.

“When a man is down, he should not be further attacked,” the king said, invoking a well-known Zulu proverb.

Royal family spokesperson Prince Thulani Zulu elaborated that Mchunu had initially arrived at the KwaKhangelamankengane Palace with senior police officials to meet the king on a private matter. However, while the meeting was still underway, police proceeded to raid the Mashobeni Palace with sniffer dogs, without proper explanation.

When approached for comment, Mchunu declined to respond, saying only:

“For now I am not talking to the media, so let us avoid that for now.”

Court Victory and Reconciliation

The imbizo was called after the Supreme Court of Appeal upheld President Cyril Ramaphosa’s 2022 decision to recognise Misuzulu as the rightful Zulu monarch, overturning a previous Pretoria High Court ruling.

King Misuzulu said his message to the Zulu nation was one of unity and peace, even as he continues to face political and personal challenges.

“Forgiveness brings healing,” he said. “We must not allow bitterness to divide our people or weaken the throne.”
