King Misuzulu Challenges Critic To Stick Fight At Reed Dance Ceremony

AmaZulu monarch King Misuzulu kaZwelithini sparked controversy at the annual reed dance over the weekend when he openly challenged his critic, Professor Musa Xulu, to a stick fight.

The unprecedented outburst happened before thousands of maidens gathered at eMashobeni in northern KwaZulu-Natal, marking the first time such remarks were made during the long-standing tradition.

The king accused Xulu, a cultural analyst, of showing disrespect to the royal house through his criticism of the decision to relocate the reed dance from eNyokeni Palace to eMashobeni.

Dispute Over Relocation of Reed Dance

King Misuzulu’s anger was reportedly triggered by remarks questioning the relocation of the cultural event. Millions of rands have recently been invested in refurbishing eNyokeni Palace, including R140 million spent on a new dome for cultural gatherings.

While clarifying that he was not calling on the AmaZulu nation to confront Xulu, the king declared his readiness to defend cultural traditions in a stick fight against anyone who doubted them.

“The nations are angry – we are angry. We will do anything to protect our cultures. Do you understand?” King Misuzulu said.

He further dismissed Xulu’s academic background, insisting it does not qualify him to dictate how the monarch should lead.
