UPDATE | Killer Couple Arrested In Shakaskraal For Brutal Murder Of Single Father

A quiet evening in Shakas Head, KwaZulu-Natal, turned into horror when 34-year-old Doctor William Mputhi was brutally hacked to death with a sickle outside his home on Saturday evening. The attack took place at around 18:30 in front of his six-year-old daughter.

According to reports, the suspects—both aged 34—fled the scene with the blood-soaked weapon, taking their three-year-old daughter with them. Mputhi was rushed to a Tongaat clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Nationwide Manhunt and Social Media Tip-Offs

On Monday morning, Mputhi’s mother-in-law reached out to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), fearing the killers would escape justice.

RUSA immediately circulated the suspects’ details on social media, which led to an outpouring of tip-offs from across the country, including Johannesburg, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg, and Shakaskraal.

Reaction Officers followed up on 27 different leads before finally tracking the suspects to a five-bedroom house in Shakas Head, believed to be used as a criminal hideout.

Killer Couple Arrested at High-Risk Hideout

RUSA deployed eight officers to secure the property and block surrounding roads. Suspicious activity was observed inside, and officers soon confirmed the suspects were hiding within.

The female suspect was spotted carrying her three-year-old daughter and was arrested without resistance. Her husband, however, attempted to hide under a pile of clothes in a bedroom before being forcibly restrained.

Both suspects are now in custody at SAPS Umhlali under case number CAS 347/08/2025 (Murder).

SurgeZirc SA initially reported that the woman’s husband, Mevedran Reddy, returned around 6:30 p.m., to hear about the issue that had happened earlier between the deceased and his wife.

The couple confronted Mputhi outside his home. Witnesses reported that Reddy attacked him with a sickle, repeatedly stabbing and slashing his chest, ribs, and stomach while shouting, “Nobody will touch my wife and live.”
